People often expect therapy to feel immediately relieving, but early sessions can sometimes feel awkward, tiring, or even frustrating. Talking about personal experiences with a stranger takes time. Is this discomfort a normal part of starting therapy, or are there signs that a therapist or treatment approach may not be a good fit?

I think therapy can feel uncomfortable at first because you’re talking about personal things with someone you barely know. It can take time to build trust and feel safe enough to be honest. I’d expect some awkwardness initially, especially when discussing thoughts or experiences that are difficult to share.

Sometimes therapy feels uncomfortable because you’re being asked to slow down and talk about things you normally avoid. I’ve had conversations where I knew something was bothering me but struggled to put it into words. That silence and uncertainty can make the first few sessions feel pretty strange.

The first few therapy sessions can feel awkward because there may be uncertainty about what to say or how much to share. Sitting quietly with uncomfortable emotions can also feel strange. Over time, getting familiar with the therapist and the process may make conversations feel more natural.
