Someone who has experienced rejection may become cautious about approaching new people, joining groups, or sharing personal opinions. Avoiding rejection can feel safer in the short term. How does fear of rejection affect social confidence, and why can avoidance make future social situations feel even more threatening?

Fear of rejection can make someone second-guess almost everything they say or do around others. They might avoid starting conversations or hold back their opinions because they’re worried about being judged. Even when people want to connect, that constant worry can make them seem less confident than they actually are.

Fear of rejection can make even ordinary interactions feel risky. I’ve had moments where I overthought what to say and ended up saying nothing, which felt safer at the time. But avoiding those situations can reinforce the idea that socializing is dangerous, making confidence harder to build.
