Sometimes the difficult part of an event is not the event itself but spending days imagining everything that could go wrong. This can happen before appointments, meetings, social events, or difficult conversations. Why does anticipatory anxiety become so exhausting, and what keeps the worrying cycle going?

It’s exhausting because your mind can start dealing with a situation long before it actually happens. I’ve had moments where I kept replaying what might go wrong, even though nothing had happened yet. By the time the event arrived, I already felt mentally drained from worrying about it.

Sometimes the event itself isn’t even that difficult, but waiting for it can drain you. I’ve had situations where I spent hours thinking about what might go wrong, only to find everything went fine. That constant mental preparation feels exhausting because your brain never really gets a chance to switch off.

Anticipatory anxiety can be exhausting because your mind keeps treating possible problems as if they’re already happening. I’ve had times when I worried about a conversation for days, only for it to go completely fine. The worrying continues because imagining every possible outcome can feel like a way to stay prepared.
