Depression is often described as sadness, but some people mainly experience emptiness or emotional numbness. They may stop reacting strongly to things they once enjoyed. Why does depression sometimes feel like emotional numbness rather than sadness, and how can this affect relationships, work, and everyday decisions?

I think depression can sometimes make people feel emotionally numb because they become mentally exhausted from dealing with difficult feelings for so long. I’ve had days when even things I normally enjoy felt strangely distant. It can be confusing because you may care about something but struggle to actually feel it.

Depression doesn’t always feel like sadness; for some people, it can feel like being disconnected from emotions altogether. This numbness can make relationships harder because they may struggle to show affection or engage with others. It can also affect work and decisions by making everyday tasks feel meaningless or overwhelming.
