Guilt can be useful when it encourages someone to repair genuine harm, but some people continue feeling guilty long after a situation has been resolved. Why does excessive guilt become difficult to release, and how can it affect self-esteem, relationships, and everyday emotional wellbeing?

I think guilt can be difficult to let go of because people keep replaying what they could have done differently. Even after apologizing or trying to make things right, the mind may continue looking for punishment. Sometimes forgiving yourself feels harder than forgiving someone else.

Guilt can become overwhelming when someone keeps replaying past mistakes and starts defining themselves by what happened. I’ve had moments where I was harder on myself than anyone else was. Healthy guilt can encourage change, but excessive guilt can damage confidence, create distance in relationships, and make everyday life feel heavier.
